When Should You Reset Your AC?

If your AC won’t turn on, keeps running without cooling, or has tripped the circuit breaker, resetting it may fix the issue.

How to Reset Your AC

  • Turn off the thermostat: Set it to “off” to stop the system.
  • Switch off the breaker: Locate the AC breaker in your electrical panel and turn it off.
  • Wait 5–10 minutes: This allows the system to fully reset.
  • Turn everything back on: Flip the breaker back on and set the thermostat to cooling mode.

What If the Reset Doesn’t Work?

If your AC still isn’t working after a reset, there may be a larger issue, such as a failing capacitor or refrigerant problem. A professional technician can diagnose and repair the problem.
